What do Skyscanner's 'Greener Choice' labels mean?
We label the flights we believe emit less CO2 compared to average. It’s just one of the ways we’re helping travellers make informed decisions and we're consistently looking at improving the accuracy of our calculation.
So how is it calculated?
First of all, we look at the aircraft model. Typically, newer planes are more fuel efficient. Fuel efficiency also means lower costs for the airline, so often these flights are cheaper.
Then we look at distance travelled (and whether the route is direct or not. Flying direct is often better as the most fuel intensive part of the journey is during take-off.
Finally, we consider seat capacity. Simply, the more seats a flight has, the lower the fuel consumption per seat on-board. But anything that can be done to reduce weight on the aircraft is a good thing, so even packing light makes a difference.
Based on these considerations, if a flight has at least 4% less than average CO2 for that route, we’ll mark it as a ‘Greener choice’.
We get this data from various industry sources and are continually improving our calculation.
Sometimes we have to estimate but industry data is improving all the time so our calculations are getting more accurate.
This is just the beginning
